Democrat candidates have split with President Biden over the lifting of pandemic restrictions on the border. The idea is that there must either be a replacement for the measure, or a reworking of the immigration system as a whole. This would suggest that the party is unsure as a whole in regards to discussing the border. Thus, the calls for broader change tend to leave much to be desired in the form of more specific instances of reform.
